Welcome to the EduPrint News~ Issue Six

EduPrint Supports Community Integration

One of the most outstanding benefits that EduPrint has displayed in 2008 has been the high level of community involvement with various organisations throughout the United Kingdom. We have literally hundreds of examples where EduPrint Centres have been commissioned by various bodies to produce high quality printed literature.

Town halls, Cathedrals, Universities, City Councils, Local Authorities as well as all types of Sporting Clubs have charged students with projects to produce all manner of printed matter from booklets to brochures and from posters to huge banners stretching across High Streets.

So what better seasonal example could we give at this time of the year than the one we have chosen below.

The Making of Cinderella

A most illustrative example of the huge potential for Community Integration and Cohesion has recently seen the students of the Portsmouth Children's University using their artistic and creative talents to design and produce a traditional collage. This was then reproduced as a six square metre vinyl banner using the new super EduPrint facilities at the Pompey Study Centre and used by the Kings Theatre in Southsea for the opening of this years pantomime, Cinderella.

How cool is this? (Full story below and see the finished artwork on the HP stand at the BETT Show)

Background

The Children’s University (CU) aims to help Portsmouth children find out about themselves and to help them learn in fun and exciting situations. We encourage them to learn new skills, make new friends from other schools and experience new learning environments.

Local venues such as the Kings Theatre work alongside us to provide learning experiences to help children gain a more in-depth knowledge of their city. Our aim is to open up a child’s eyes to see what wonderful facilities we have available to us in Portsmouth, for them to go into buildings that they walk past everyday to school and go inside them. In short to understand their city and their community.

This special piece of artwork was created in conjunction with the Pompey Study Centre’s new premises opening in September. Eleven lucky CU children were selected to take part in a one-off special workshop to showcase the Children’s University at the opening. Together the children created a stunning collage to advertise the Kings Theatre’s new pantomime, Cinderella. Each child created their own drawing of a mouse and this was then added onto the bottom of the artwork. The finished artwork will be displayed on the side of the Kings Theatre itself!

The Children’s University was started in 2002 and has had 5659 different children on its courses totalling an astonishing 143000 hours of learning between them. The project offers over 1000 places on courses to children across the city every term. Our aim is to find the very best in new and exciting activities for children to come and try. Courses are as varied as possible to really challenge and engage different personalities. We also offer some after-school clubs and occasionally themed one-day specials. The Children’s University (CU) is for children in Years 4, 5, 6 & 7. Kids’ College (KC) is for children in Years 2 & 3 and Youth Uni children in Years 7,8 and 9. The Project does not charge for course places, but accepts voluntary contributions to ensure that the whole of the community can take part in extra learning opportunities.
